The meaning of Yang knows the concept of being a good friend is well known to students. However, perhaps it hasn’t caused us to pay much attention to that although the confidant seems to be a positive word, it has a key feature that can be regarded as a definite and negligible. Originally, in daily applications, the two concepts of confidant and conscience are very small. But in the context of traditional philosophy, confidants are given special meanings. The “good” of conscience is important to refer to moral integrity or kindness. In addition to this meaning, the “good” of a confidant also has its negative content. This is first given by Mencius:
What people cannot learn but are capable of is their good ability. What you know without fear is his confidant. All children who love their parents are so old that they respect their brothers. [1]
Here, the good skills of confidants are defined by two words restricted by the word “no”. Good abilities are “capable without learning”, which is a talent that does not require learning; confidants are “know without thinking”, which is knowledge that does not require thinking. In addition, what we know is the same as what we usually apply the concept of conscience, and it is the knowledge of virtue.
Yang Ming completely inherited this statement from Mencius:
The long-term and short-term heart is known without fear, and can be able without learning. It is what you call a close friend. A close friend lies in the hearts of the people, and is not in the minds of the holy and fools, and it is the same in the past and present throughout the country. [2]74
Knowing is the essence of the heart, the heart will naturally know: seeing your father naturally knows filial piety, seeing your brother naturally knows younger brother, and seeing a child naturally knows hiding when entering the well, this is a confidant who does not seek outside. If a close friend develops himself, he will be selfless and unwilling to do so, which is what he calls “the only thing he has a loving heart, but benevolence will not be used to achieve success.” [2]6
Yangming’s mind learning is a systematic development of the theory of Mencius’s confidant. Like Mencius, Yangmingxin is a classical theory of nature. The concept of a confidant is the basis of his nature. Therefore, the meaning, content, method of obtaining, etc. of a confidant determines the color and temperament of the theory.
Mencius used “knowing without fear” and “capture software without learning” to know oneself, but in fact, he did not make a solid distinction between the two. In Yangming, “know without fear” and “know without learning” are all used to describe confidants. In fact, whether in Mencius or in Yangming, there is almost no difference between “knowledge” and “energy”, and the same is true for “not learning” and “not being ungrateful”. In other words, “not learning” shows that a confidant who knows good and avoids evil is not the knowledge and talents gained from teaching, learning, experience and environment, but what we have ourselves. Some researchers, like Mr. Chen, call it first-hand talent, some call it acquired talent, and some call it generated talent. Geng Ning opposed the use of the word “generated” to explain “not learning”, and he believed that “generated” is alive.The meaning of physics is very far from the energy and essence of the confidant. We believe that regardless of the tags on it, the meaning of “not learning” is often obvious, and there is no need for any explanation in fact: I already understood it, so how can I learn it?
